How do environmental toxins play a part in ADHD and brain health?

Read to learn more about the most common exposures & what you can do about it!

PESTICIDES

Pesticides have been linked to ADHD, memory issues, learning disabilities, anger, rage, addictions, and more. This occurs by disruption of Dopamine, synaptic injury and impaired synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus, and disruption of communication between cells by altering BDVE’s (brain derived extracellular vesicles).

MAIN SOURCE OF EXPOSURE:

Non organic food-

Chlorpyrifos being by far the most toxic . Banned multiple times but recently brought back again. 6000 times more toxic than pesticides with lowest toxicity. Sprayed on all non organic corn soy and wheat and many more crops – gets into food

Unfiltered water –

So many tons have been sprayed and saturated soils that it is washed down into our waterways and makes its way into drinking water. “Inert” ingredients of pesticides , mostly toxic metals, are not required to be on the label by the EPA. However we know that these inert ingredients are neurotoxic .

FLAME RETARDANTS

Flame retardants have also been linked to ADHD and exposure has been proven to take place in utero. These chemicals, along with lead and mercury, have been linked to lower IQ rates as well.

MAIN SOURCE OF EXPOSURE:

Mostly through dust which contains micro/nano sized particles that flaked off of carpet, furniture, clothing, and inhaled from mattresses. Almost all mattresses have them! Thankfully there are better options available on the market now, but you have to be diligent especially when it comes to children as they are particularly vulnerable.

TOXIC METALS

Lead, mercury, and cadmium, among other toxic metals are known to be Neurotoxins. They can interrupt the exchange of information from one brain cell ( neuron) to another, creating inattention and hyperactivity disorders. All of these toxic metals can create many different neurodegenerative diseases by way of their interruption of basic brain cell functions.

MAIN SOURCE OF EXPOSURE:

LEAD- water, dust from paint in older homes or soil, pottery , gun ranges, in utero, cosmetics, hair dyes especially red and black, tattoos. childrens toys, dinner plates, greens drinks, non third party tested supplements especially from India and China, cheaper jewelry, wine, cigarette smoke, air water or soil near mines , industrial pollution, vegetables grown in soil near factories emitting it, occupational exposures, wildfire smoke.

MERCURY – in utero, from mothers who ate mercury contaminated fish, had dental amalgams, tattoos, vaccines and other injections, dental offices, air water or soil near mines, old fashioned thermometers breaking, mercurochrome, hard contact lens solutions used before 1999, living near cement factories, crematories, industrial pollution, wildfire smoke

CADMIUM- cigarette smoke, yellow paint and tatoos, vegetables grown in soil near factories emitting it, chocolate, occupational exposures working in factory emitting it into the air

ELECTRONIC SCREEN SYNDROME

We know that gaming in particular, but interactive videos on screens release a tremendous amount of dopamine. On a brain scan it looks something like cocaine use. When these reward pathways are overstimulated they become less sensitive, requiring more and more stimulation. This leads to emotional crashes in kids when screens are taken away. THEY HAVE THE BRAIN OF AN ADDICT.

In her book, “Reset your child’s Brain in 3 weeks”, Dr Dunckley helps us to see why kids whose brains are overstimulated by screens also crave sugar and have trouble sleeping. The high arousal of the gaming depresses melatonin and prevents deep sleep, which is needed for healing and repair. This in turn can compound and create poor emotional control and increased impulsivity. Adults can mostly handle this better but for kids, symptoms of Electronic Screen syndrome can vary from anxiety, extreme separation anxiety, fits of rage, poor socialization, not getting school work done, aggression, headaches, and even seizures or hallucinations. Dr Dunckley has shown that she can get 80% of children off their medications through removal of screens for three weeks!

TREATMENT:

AVOIDANCE:

Organic food, filtered water, STOP spraying in or near home, air filters in the home. Take off shoes at the door if you live near those who spray . consider moving away from high exposure areas.

Replace mattresses with avocado or other non toxic brand. Look for clothing, flooring and furniture options free of flame retardants. This can be daunting, but is worth it! If your budget will not allow non toxic products, wash new clothes multiple times before wearing in non fragranced natural laundry soap, put a high quality air filter like Austin Air Health Mate plus or bedroom unit in affected rooms.

DETOXING STRATEGIES:

Detoxing strategies- sauna, ioncleanse foot bath and high quality binders such as Cell Core HM-ET or Viradchem in www.shopfwstore.com
